Icelandic Foreign Minister, Össur Skarphedinsson, visits Luxembourg

Published Thursday November 20 2014

On 21 June 2012, Össur Skarphedinsson, Iceland’s Foreign Minister, met Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Jean Asselborn .

During the meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministers praised the excellent political and economic relations that exist between Luxembourg and Iceland. They also discussed various strategies to boost trade between the two countries. The meeting provided an opportunity for the ministers to look at the progress of Iceland’s accession negotiations with the EU, which began in the summer of 2010 following Iceland’s application for EU membership in July 2009. The main issues of contention during Iceland’s accession negotiations have proved to be the Common Fisheries Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy. Minister Asselborn, however, stated that he was convinced that such outstanding issues could be resolved during future talks and emphasized his continued support for Iceland’s application.

Minister Asselborn and Minister Skarphedinsson also discussed the economic situation in Iceland before moving on to current European and International issues.
